Christmas wishing tree idea is pure gold
COMMONWEALTH Games gold medallist Thomas Pichler is encouraging residents to support those in need this festive season.
The 24-year-old Cleveland gymnast who won two gold medals in Delhi in October was at Capalaba's Kmart store on Tuesday, November 16, to launch the annual Wishing Tree Appeal.
As part of Kmart's national campaign, people can wrap up gifts and leave them under the 20m tree outside the store.
All gifts, big and small, are appreciated.
People of all ages need support and, in particular, boys and girls aged 10 to 12 years, as this is the age group that most often goes without at Christmas.
A few simple ideas for gifts include books, clothing, games, toys and sports equipment.
"All the gifts then go to the Salvation Army, which distributes them throughout the community," Kmart Capalaba shop assistant Margaret Rogers said.
"There is something for everyone under the tree, which has been a huge success in Capalaba since Kmart first erected it for Christmas 22 years ago.
"Having Thomas to come and help really makes a difference and lots of people were interested in looking at his gold medals.
"This year, the Capalaba store hopes to collect about 450,000 presents," Margaret said.
Last year, Kmart collected 4.9 million gifts from its stores around Australia for the Salvation Army.
