Athletes welcomed home

REDLAND City Council hosted a reception for Delhi Commonwealth Games athletes on Friday.

Mayor Melva Hobson congratulated (from left) divers James Connor, of Ormiston, and Sharleen Stratton, of Capalaba, weightlifter Erika Yamasaki and gymnast Thomas Pichler, of Cleveland.

The Redlands had a strong presence in the Australian team with locals bringing home a swag of medals including two gold to Thomas and a gold and two silver to Sharleen.

Birkdale swimmer Alicia Coutts scored five medals; diver Melissa Wu, of Thornlands, took silver; archer Mathew Masonwells, of Alexandra Hills, brought home gold for the men's recurve team event, and cyclist Emily Rosemond rounded out the tally with a bronze medal in the women's sprint.
